Project Overview:
Celsa Manufacturing (UK) Ltd is a major steel producer using Arc Furnace technology to re-cycle scrap into a range of steel products. Following acquisition of the site in Cardiff, Celsa committed to a major investment in a new melt shop as the primary source for steel for the rest of the works.
The melt shop comprises a new Electric Arc Furnace along with associated Ladle Refining Furnaces and billet handling equipment. The new melt shop required increased electrical power and a new connection to the National Grid system was required.
Project Involvement:
Negotiations with National Grid for an increased power supply from the 275 kV system – this included transformer, switchgear and protection requirements as well as commercial and charging issues;
A critical requirement of the connection was negotiating measures to ensure compliance with power quality requirements such as flicker whilst minimising costs to Celsa;
Technical support to manage the electrical construction program and to minimise outages to the existing site while the new facility was installed and commissioned;
Specialist technical assistance in preparing the electrical tenders for a new 33 kV substation and associated cable and protection systems to supply the new melt shop.
